Incoming CAQ Government To Keep Crucifix In Legislature While Demanding Civil Servants Lose Religious Symbols

The incoming Coalition Avenir Quebec government is facing criticism for saying it has no intention of removing the crucifix from the legislature, even as it plans to crack down on some civil servants who wear religious symbols.

Simon Jolin-Barrette, a spokesman for the Coalition transition team, said Tuesday there is no contradiction between the new government’s plan to impose strict religious-neutrality rules on certain public servants and its desire to maintain the crucifix.

He said the crucifix, which has hung behind the Speaker’s chair since the 1930s, is part of Quebec’s heritage.

Anyways fuck la caq.

This is nothing more than the government using laicism as an excuse for islamophobia. They claim to want our government to be truly without religious influence, but refuse to take down THE GIANT CATHOLIC SYMBOL IN OUR PARLEMENT.

Yeah. We have a catholic heritage here in Quebec. Yeah we demanded that there be clear separation of church and state.

But I’d ask Legault this: which seems to provide the closest link between our government and religion: teachers or any other civil servants wearing clothes that corresponds to their own personal religious belief or a huge religious symbol hanging over the head of our lawmakers?

And guess what: other religions are part of other cultures heritages. And when we welcome them here, they become part of our culture too. But it’s so much easier to be afraid of those who are different. It’s so much easier when it’s “us” against “them”. It’s so much easier when you can get all your purelaine friends to unite because you’ve told them they have a common enemy.

But when we’re taking decisions that determine the livelihoods of people, the inclusion of people and just basic human decency and open-mindedness, we can’t chose the easy way. Because the right decisions are never easy.

And by implementing regulations that hurt people of other religions but not christians, then you’re doing exactly what the church wants you to do. We can never truly be free from the church on a government level until we start taking action against the racism, sexism, colonialism and the fear of other religions that the church taught us.

So yeah. Fuck la caq. Fuck their islamophobia and fuck their bigotry. I’m québécoise, and I’ll stand against them. And I’m not alone. We as a people can do better and we have an obligation to do better. And I encourage anyone opposed to the caq to be loud and clear about it and let be known by all that we’re not just going to take this lying down.

Sorry for the rant, but I’m angry and dissspointed in my country, and in my people.

Hank Green + his friends made a whole YouTube channel dedicated to videos explaining how to vote in every. single. state. None of them are longer than three and a half minutes. Deadlines to register are fast approaching in a lot of places so it’s incredibly important that everyone is well informed about what they need to do in order to exercise their right and make their voice heard. Go forth, America. Show up for what you believe in. Make good choices. Please.

How The Dragon Prince carefully handled General Amaya’s deafness

tdp-news:

Polygon: In a Reddit AMA earlier this week, Aaron mentioned that you spent a lot of time talking to and working with members of the deaf community. What was that process like?

Iain Hendry: We both reached out to deaf and HoH [hard of hearing] organizations, which have great online resources that helped us understand the challenges and the way deaf and HoH people approach the world. And then to get a more personal view, I went to deaf and HoH Facebook groups, so I’d chat with people … It helped us to stay connected and understand their experience as best we could.

So many people had a hand in creating this character, from us writing the lines to people doing the animation and every other part of this process, and a lot of them had a friend or acquaintance that they could talk to. And on the more professional side, we had a huge amount of help from ASL interpreters we worked with directly, Lucy Farley and Darcie Kerr, so when we were doing video references in the scenes where Amaya is doing ASL, we could say, “Does this come across as authentic? Are we going in the right direction with the character?”

Polygon: Some of Amaya’s most intimate moments are untranslated — was that a conscious choice?

Devon Giehl: That was very deliberate. We went back and forth on it, but we decided that when Gren wasn’t speaking for her, she spoke for herself. The scene where she’s at her sister’s grave—we were worried, because it’s a show for children, that we might lose people. But then the animation came back, and she was so emotive, and it’s so beautiful. I think even in the absence of subtitles, it really stands on its own. And she’s a deaf character — we wanted it so that understanding what she’s communicating here is for the deaf audience.

Capitalism at its best.  Some role models we should all consider.  I am a fan of Hagen Daz, but after reading this, I need to get me some Cherry Garcia!

I just need to work for them tbh

And they openly support Black Lives Matter. They are GOLD ❤️

they also have an AMAZING dairy free almondmilk ice cream. changed my life

They’ve also gone in front of congress to testify that every shitty business’s claims that minimum wage hikes are bad are complete bullshit

Ben and Jerry have also been arrested for peaceful protest at least one time, so we know they’re the coolest

YES FUCK YES

No ok but I actually met him. Several of my colleagues and students were hired to do some assessments for several manmade and natural ponds on his property. He wanted to maintain them with several different fish populations so that kids nearby could fish and have a good time.

While we were working he rode up in his four wheeler with a terrified look on his face. I never thought I would see a former football player on the verge of tears, but boy howdy he nearly was. Several of us stop what we were doing and go over to see what was up.

“I was running the tractor through the field and almost hit a fawn.” He says.

Now, for reference, it’s pretty common to have farmers run over and kill fawns. The defense mechanism of fawns when they are young is to lay down low and not move…which obviously isn’t great for when there’s a tractor. It happens all the time, but it can be pretty bloody. It’s not a pretty sight.

So, thinking that maybe such a gory scene unnerved him and that we may have to dispose of the body, I say “Mr. Brown, is the fawn still alive?”

He says “Yes, I took it to the barn…but I’m afraid the mom won’t take it back because it has human scent on it.”

The myth about “human scent” is a common one, but it’s just that…a myth. But still, this guy was absolutely terrified that this little deer was going to live the first few weeks of its life without a parent. He was distraught.

Luckily my professor/boss was like “Don’t worry Mr. Brown, if you return the fawn relatively close to the spot that you found it, the mother will come back. The human scent thing is just a myth. The fawn will be alright, just be sure to keep the barn quiet so that the fawn doesn’t panic.”

Mr. Brown’s face lit up and he let out a sigh of relief. “Thank God” he said “I was so worried.”

And that’s the story of how I met the sweetest man ever: Mr. Jason Brown.

fyi Jason Brown is still the cutest

I can’t believe this is a real story, but it’s a real story.
