Guys, Ford was ‘elected’ THIS SUMMER.

Here’s a better breakdown of what Toronto City Council is going to look like this term (the original chart is here), although Thompson, Grimes, and Karygiannis really should be on the evil side. Shelley Carroll and John Filion could arguably be labelled as neutrals, but it’s close enough.
The silver lining to the conservative tilt of this council is that we at least got rid of a lot of really, really horrible councillors.
Jagmeet Singh urges feds to fund Ontario’s basic income pilot project scrapped by Ford
NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh is calling on the federal government to pick up the tab to continue a basic income pilot project scrapped by Ontario Premier Doug Ford.
The $150-million, three-year project was initiated by the province’s previous Liberal government but Ford announced last summer that his Conservative government will end the project in March, a year ahead of schedule.
Singh says the premature end of the pilot will make it impossible to amass enough data to determine how effective a basic income program could be in lifting Canadians out of poverty.
And he says it leaves in the lurch the 4,000 Ontarians who are involved in the pilot.

Ford government disbands Liberals’ expert panel to end violence against women
Ontario’s Progressive Conservative government has pulled the plug on an expert panel to end violence against women that was established under the Liberals to provide strategic advice on policies.
Community and Social Services Minister Lisa MacLeod, who is also responsible for women’s issues, immigration and poverty reduction, informed the panel, called the Roundtable on Violence Against Women, in a letter on Tuesday.
“Although we recognize the valuable advice your members have provided,” she wrote, “we will not be reconvening this particular roundtable created by the previous government. In the near future, however, I look forward to working with representatives across various sectors to advance the empowerment of women across the province and to address violence against women and human trafficking.”

This might be the most exciting new candidate for Toronto mayor
The election for mayor of Toronto is just two weeks away, and media coverage of the race’s top contenders is ramping up.
As the debates rage on, two out of 35 candidates vying for a spot at the helm of the city have all but monopolized the press: incumbent mayor John Tory, naturally, and his supposed main opponent, former City of Toronto chief Planner Jennifer Keesmaat.
Since Keesmaat’s entry into the race against her former boss, the Johnny vs. Jenny rivalry has been the major through-line of the election so far. One could almost be led to believe the whole thing is a two-horse race.
But just beyond the limelight, another candidate is slowly gaining traction with a bold platform and, arguably, some of the best debate performances so far.
Saron Gebresellassi, a 31-year-old lawyer, has been making some impressive jabs at Tory and Keesmaat, giving both longtime political heavyweights a run for their money at the debate hosted by Global News.
Aside from being the youngest candidate by at least a decade or two to participate in the televised debates, the Eritrean-Canadian activist-turned-lawyer is the only woman of colour in the core group of candidates.
As a young lawyer, the Ryerson grad has taken on some very high-profile civil rights cases representing women, including suing Starbucks for $1 million, and fighting a maternity-leave dismissal.
Having moved to Toronto from Eritrea in 1989 and grown up in York Square community housing by Jane and Lawrence, Gebresellassi’s platform is taking a heavy stance on policing and affordable housing.

Professor David Hulchanski from the University of Toronto has released a study showing how increasingly segregated Toronto has become:
Using the 2016 census, his team calculated that 48 per cent of Toronto’s census tracts are low-income neighbourhoods, where the average individual income is $32,000 before taxes. Fully 68 per cent of residents in these neighbourhoods are visible minorities while 31 per cent are white. (Whites make up 49 per cent of Toronto’s population.)
The main ethno-cultural communities in these low-income neighbourhoods are all overrepresented compared to their share of the city’s population. Black residents, for example, are 9 per cent of the population but make up 13 per cent of residents of low-income neighbourhoods.
High-income neighbourhoods are almost a reverse image. They make up 23 per cent of Toronto’s census tracts, with average individual incomes of $102,000 before tax. Fully 73 per cent of residents in these neighbourhoods are white, far higher than their share of the city’s population. The rest are visible minorities, of whom only 3 per cent are Black.
Whites are also overrepresented in middle-income neighbourhoods, where the average income is $49,000.
“Money buys choice. And people with the most choice are choosing to live in certain areas,” Hulchanski says, explaining the disproportionately high concentration of white residents in high- and middle-income communities.
We asked all 76 members of Doug Ford’s Progressive Conservative caucus if they would denounce a white nationalist
“No one in Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s 76-member Progressive Conservative caucus would say if they believe Ford should apologize for posing in a photo with a white nationalist who participated in a neo-Nazi podcast, a National Observer survey has revealed.“
I have studiously avoided any and every news of that bitch ass Doug Ford and his fuckwit party passing Bill 33 w/ the notwithstanding clause because of how angry it makes me. I honestly hope that him and every single one of the MPs in his party who supported that shit stub their toe for the rest of eternity. I cannot believe this greasy troglodyte that crawled out of the depths from the great lakes is pulling this shit because of a grudge match against the city of Toronto. Fuck him. Fuck the Progressive Conservatives. And fuck every single one of the people who voted for him.
