It’s International Women’s Day. A day that celebrates women and fights the oppression against them. Muslim women face oppression from those in the West who do not understand their religion as well as those within the religion who do not act upon it’s teachings. So, to clear some things up – here are some of the rights women have in Islam:
The Muslim women receives (not gives) the bridal gift/dowry. The dowry is the women’s right and cannot be taken from her
Muslim women can own property and retain all ownership once married
Muslim women keep their last name after marriage
Any earnings the Muslim woman acquires during her life (investments, work, property) does not have to be used to support the household
The financial maintenance of a household is the man’s responsibility in Islam. Even if the Muslim women is richer than the man, she does not have to contribute. Therefore, his money is her money and her money is her money
A divorced Muslim woman has right to child support
Muslim women have the right to divorce
Muslim women have the right of satisfaction from their husband
Education is the right of a Muslim woman. Muslim women are encouraged to become whatever profession they desire in Islam (physicians, teachers, engineers, writers, artists, etc.). A true Islamic society will have women in all career fields
Muslim women are entitled to equal pay
The choice of WHO she may marry is solely her choice. A forced marriage is not valid under Islamic law
Muslim women mothers have 3 times the rights over their children than their father does
Muslim women had always had a spot in law making and politics when Islam first came. Culture corrupted that
Muslim women carried arms and fought in battles
In Islam, daughters are a blessing that provides immediate benefit spiritually to families – if they treat her correctly
Islam predates Europe in giving rights to women by around 1300 years. Islam came during a time of severe oppression to women and worked diligently to raise the status of women.
In terms of what I’m seeing on Twitter re: calls for solidarity with the Jewish community by gentiles, it’s predominantly coming from Muslims. The pastors/ministers I’ve seen tweeting support are almost entirely from the Black community.
White Christians, y’all are unsurprisingly fucking silent right now, and that includes so-called progressives. Just know: I fucking see you.
Maybe if y’all stopped shitting on Christians so much they’d care more.
Maybe if y’all stopped persecuted us like you’ve been doing literally since the dawn of Christianity, we wouldn’t have to
Probably better they don’t, no one should depend on people who can only care about others conditionally and even then just to advance their reputation
People who sin are still Muslim. I’m not just talking minor sins. I’m talking people who commit zina regularly, people who drink and smoke and party, hell even people who commit crimes. Girls who don’t wear hijab or who don’t wear it correctly, people who listen to music. You can’t invalidate someone’s Islam or identity as a Muslim because they commit sins. They may or may not be working toward leaving those sins but it’s honestly none of your business. A man who murdered 100 people went to jannah because of his repentance. A woman who was a prostitute went to jannah because of her kindness towards a cat. It’s so so easy to fall into the trap of being a harsh, unforgiving and judgmental person as you become more practising. Constantly check yourself for these traits. And this is a reminder to myself too.
Remember the Muslim group who started raising funds to help pay for funerals and medical expenses for the victims in Pittsburgh?? Well. They’re not done yet. Look at this
They have increased their goal several times and exceeded it within hours. HOURS!!
Here is their latest update
They’re asking you to please donate to their other fund, to help the victims of the shooting in Kentucky. These people are beyond amazing. They give me hope for the future and restore my faith in humanity.
They haven’t reached their goal with this one yet. If you’re feeling compelled to donate, please donate to the Kentucky fund. Because of everything else going on, it hasn’t gotten nearly as much attention. But these two peoples lives were just as important. They were just as loved and they will be just as missed.
And because they haven’t gotten as much attention and their stories aren’t in the news as much, here’s their story. From the fund raiser.
Please pass this around. If you can’t donate, someone who sees your reblog might.
Respond to evil with good.
It has been two and half hours since I posted this and the funds raised has increased by almost $2800 !!! This is amazing !! You are wonderful people for helping in any way you can.
Keep up the great work!!
PS: the fund for the Tree Of Life victims has raised an additional $11k in the past two and half hours as well. How amazing is that ?!
What I find sad and disheartening is that while many women tout equality for both genders, it is often those same women who are dismissive of the choices people of the same gender make themselves. Like, do you really think so many Muslim women, many of whom are very well educated, would cover themselves completely in the scorching hot summers if they weren’t compelled by the evidence presented in favor of the physical hijab?
Men do not dictate the actions of all Muslim women. Just because a sheikh in Saudi Arabia says the physical hijab is mandatory doesn’t mean that’s why women wear it.
And just for the record, here are a few modern women scholars in various specialties of Islam who choose to cover:
Dr. Ingrid Mattson Dr. Soad Saleh Dr. Intisar Rabb Dr. Zainab Alwani Dr. Jamillah Karim Dr. Nimat Hafez Barazangi Houda al-Habash Nadia Yassine
And those are just the ones I thought of off the top of my head.
A few rights given to women in Islam, a good 1,400+ years ago, when women were viewed as completely subservient to men, and people practiced female infanticide:
Inheritance
Divorce
Owning, Managing, and Maintaining Property
Custody of Children
Access to Education
Choice of Spouse
Keeping One’s Maiden Name After Marriage
Equal Participation in the Political Process
Spiritual Equality
The United Nations granted women these rights in the Declaration of Human Rights. In 1948. When many countries still had not given women the right to vote. In fact, over a thousand years after the death of Prophet Mohammad (pbuh), in 1586, French Catholics were still debating whether or not women possessed souls.
I’m so sick and tired of people who don’t practice Islam telling me about my religion. You really think millions of women have been coerced into believing in a tradition that views them as subservient? Get real.
Hey, so this summer I applied to Actors’ Equity Association, but I just received news that they have a new form and a new fee of $200, which means I have to reapply and repay. I can’t afford this, as I am still job-hunting (which is proving difficult as I am physically disabled). I have about 2 weeks (until 10/30) to raise this money.
Being an Equity Member Candidate is a huge career advantage as a young actor (especially considering roles for people like me are often scarce) and I cannot add points retroactively.

Thank you so, so much for all your help these past several years. It means the world to me.
