I know Canadian Politics can ve weird and sometimes hard to understand

Which totally comes from the lack of coverage so I’ll just sum it up in a way im hoping at least most can get the gist of:

Conservatives: MindChild of House Lannister and Bolton (Joffrey under Ramsay and Roose but way worse)

Liberals: House Tyrell (Assholes with good PR)

NDP: Best of House Stark and Martell

In Canada, Jews face more hate crimes, while Muslims face more violent ones: StatCan

allthecanadianpolitics:

For years, police-reported hate crimes in Canada were inching up slowly.

They went up by three per cent in 2016 and by five per cent the year before. They even fell in 2013, dropping by 17 per cent from the year before.

That all changed last year —  police-reported hate crime rose by nearly 50 per cent, much of it driven by incidents that targeted Canada’s Jewish, Muslim and black populations, according to Statistics Canada data released on Thursday.

And the differences are even more stark when you split the incidents between violent and non-violent crime.

Among religious groups, Jews were the biggest targets for hate crimes — they were victims in 360 incidents last year.

Muslims came a close second, with 349 incidents.

Hate crimes grew for both populations.

Jews were targeted in 139 more incidents last year than in 2016, for an increase of 63 per cent.

Muslims, meanwhile, were targeted in an additional 210 incidents, for an increase of 151 per cent.

No no nooo please don’t lump Canada in with this. Idk about the others but Canada’s healthcare system is really bad. It’s among the worst if not the worst ever.

We get a medal for free healthcare but that means little when only a handful of medication is insured, hospitals are not funded enough, the racism, transphobia and a whole lot more. Indigenous women who are tricked into having their tubes tied together so they can’t have children.

Canada isn’t perfect. It’s shit. Its built on blood and slavery, just like the US, Australia and all the other places the fucking British got their hands on

Hell we still have a damn MONARCHY who takes tax money and only does ceremonial bullshit in return.

Ughhh I gotta find this tweet and smack it with some facts.

Jagmeet Singh urges feds to fund Ontario’s basic income pilot project scrapped by Ford

allthecanadianpolitics:

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh is calling on the federal government to pick up the tab to continue a basic income pilot project scrapped by Ontario Premier Doug Ford.

The $150-million, three-year project was initiated by the province’s previous Liberal government but Ford announced last summer that his Conservative government will end the project in March, a year ahead of schedule.

Singh says the premature end of the pilot will make it impossible to amass enough data to determine how effective a basic income program could be in lifting Canadians out of poverty.

And he says it leaves in the lurch the 4,000 Ontarians who are involved in the pilot.

Ottawa spent more than $2.3-million fighting claims by survivors of most notorious residential school

allthecanadianpolitics:

The federal government has spent more than $2.3-million over the past five years fighting legal cases related to the claims for compensation lodged by survivors of one of the country’s most notorious residential schools.

The amount was disclosed in an answer to a question put to the government by New Democrat MP Charlie Angus, whose Northern Ontario riding includes Fort Albany, where St. Anne’s Residential School was operated by a Roman Catholic order between 1904 and 1973.

According to the federal response, the federal departments of Justice and and Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada spent $2,313,944.52 between Jan. 1, 2013, and May 9, 2018, to handle settled cases, deal with requests for direction and take part in proceedings where former students of the school went to court to fight for compensation under the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement.

St. Anne’s, where children were forced to eat their own vomit, were whipped with wire straps and were tortured in a homemade electric chair, was the subject of a five-year probe by the Ontario Provincial Police in the 1990s, in which allegations were made against 20 different priests, nuns and laypeople. Five people were eventually convicted, three of them on charges of “indecent assault.”

An essential thread on the notwithstanding clause by Labour Lawyer, Ben Barnes and why its such a draconian move by Doug Ford.

Read the full thread here, as it is quite a bit longer than I can effectively screen capture.

Canadians need to pay attention to this shit, and let Doug Ford know.

Doug Ford’s government knew its legislation was illegal and the superior court of Ontario rejected it as unconstitutional.

He now wants to pass it into law anyways by suspending the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Sign vandalized after MP Maxime Bernier calls out Winnipeg park for ‘extreme multiculturalism’

allthecanadianpolitics:

Days after Conservative MP Maxime Bernier singled out a Winnipeg park named after a Pakistani leader in an attempt to demonstrate that multiculturalism has gone too far, the park’s new sign was vandalized.

Masroor Khan, who helped campaign to have the park renamed, was told Friday that the sign bearing the new park’s name, Jinnah Park, was knocked off its perch and left lying against a tree.

The discarded wooden stumps suggest the sign’s poles were cut with a saw.

“It’s very hurtful and saddening to see,” said Khan, standing metres from where the sign once stood in Winnipeg’s South Pointe community.

He wants to send a message to Bernier, his supporters and everyone else in Canada that hatred has no place in this country. The city’s Pakistani community will host a celebration of diversity at the park on Sunday.

Minimum wage, maximum fearmongering

allthecanadianpolitics:

Only seven months after Ontario’s minimum wage was increased to $14/h, the business lobby’s grim job loss predictions have been demolished by reality. Over the last 12 months Ontario has added over 182,000 jobs, accounting for some 74 percent of all job growth in the country during that same period. Since February, a month after the minimum wage increased by over 20 percent, over 130,000 jobs have been added. The unemployment rate has hit an 18-year low.

If there was anything resembling accountability, let alone justice in our society, many members of the business community, the media and politicians would face a reckoning.

A year ago, Ontarians were subjected to months of fearmongering about the economic dangers of Bill 148 that would raise the minimum wage from $11.60 to $14/h in 2018 and to $15/h in 2019, introduce paid emergency leave sick days, and strengthen employment standards for all workers. With Bill 148, the big business lobby proclaimed, Ontario would be closed for business.

Andrea Horwath Hammers Doug Ford’s Pivot To Math Scores During Heated Sex Ed Debate

allthecanadianpolitics:

Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath didn’t pull punches in question period Tuesday after Premier Doug Ford brought up math scores during a debate about the sexual education of students.

“If they have been raped or bullied, math won’t matter very much to them. Will it?” Horwath said, spurring applause from her bench.

Ford called Horwath’s remarks “outrageous.” At least one Progressive Conservative member could be heard in the background accusing the NDP leader of fear-mongering.

“I can assure all of us in this chamber that we certainly do know who and what is outrageous around here,” Horwath shot back.
