As statues of Sir John A. Macdonald are vandalized or removed in the country he founded, the late politician is also being disavowed by the country where he was born.

A Monday report in The Times wrote that “all references” to the Scottish-born leader are being excised from official Scottish government websites and documents.

“We acknowledge controversy around Sir John A Macdonald’s legacy and the legitimate concerns expressed by Indigenous communities,” an unnamed government spokeswoman was quoted as saying.

Sign vandalized after MP Maxime Bernier calls out Winnipeg park for ‘extreme multiculturalism’

allthecanadianpolitics:

Days after Conservative MP Maxime Bernier singled out a Winnipeg park named after a Pakistani leader in an attempt to demonstrate that multiculturalism has gone too far, the park’s new sign was vandalized.

Masroor Khan, who helped campaign to have the park renamed, was told Friday that the sign bearing the new park’s name, Jinnah Park, was knocked off its perch and left lying against a tree.

The discarded wooden stumps suggest the sign’s poles were cut with a saw.

“It’s very hurtful and saddening to see,” said Khan, standing metres from where the sign once stood in Winnipeg’s South Pointe community.

He wants to send a message to Bernier, his supporters and everyone else in Canada that hatred has no place in this country. The city’s Pakistani community will host a celebration of diversity at the park on Sunday.

Minimum wage, maximum fearmongering

allthecanadianpolitics:

Only seven months after Ontario’s minimum wage was increased to $14/h, the business lobby’s grim job loss predictions have been demolished by reality. Over the last 12 months Ontario has added over 182,000 jobs, accounting for some 74 percent of all job growth in the country during that same period. Since February, a month after the minimum wage increased by over 20 percent, over 130,000 jobs have been added. The unemployment rate has hit an 18-year low.

If there was anything resembling accountability, let alone justice in our society, many members of the business community, the media and politicians would face a reckoning.

A year ago, Ontarians were subjected to months of fearmongering about the economic dangers of Bill 148 that would raise the minimum wage from $11.60 to $14/h in 2018 and to $15/h in 2019, introduce paid emergency leave sick days, and strengthen employment standards for all workers. With Bill 148, the big business lobby proclaimed, Ontario would be closed for business.

Andrea Horwath Hammers Doug Ford’s Pivot To Math Scores During Heated Sex Ed Debate

allthecanadianpolitics:

Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath didn’t pull punches in question period Tuesday after Premier Doug Ford brought up math scores during a debate about the sexual education of students.

“If they have been raped or bullied, math won’t matter very much to them. Will it?” Horwath said, spurring applause from her bench.

Ford called Horwath’s remarks “outrageous.” At least one Progressive Conservative member could be heard in the background accusing the NDP leader of fear-mongering.

“I can assure all of us in this chamber that we certainly do know who and what is outrageous around here,” Horwath shot back.

Evacuation order was just issued tonight for the reserve next to us so we are all packing tonight. The only reason we are not under evacuation alert is because we have a river between us and the fire. Im praying the wind changes and blows the fire away from us. I hope that some of the army sent to our province is issued out to our fires but they usually keep their attention to the southern areas and Im just… its panic time. I dont want us to lose our home.

A Manitoba MLA has launched a petition calling for an inquiring into the death of Tina Fontaine.

New Democratic Party MLA for St. Johns Nahanni Fontaine shared the petition on social media on Thursday.

Petition: Save the Ontario Basic Income Pilot Project

allthecanadianpolitics:

Doug Ford’s government announced today that the Ontario basic income pilot project, which was intended to last for three years, is being cancelled prematurely.

This is devastating news for the low-income participants who are currently receiving benefits from the pilot, as well as those who worked hard to design and implement it. The pilot was already producing dramatic results for people like Dave Cherkewski of Hamilton, Ont. (pictured here), who said it was making an immeasurable difference in his life.

“I’m in shock,” he told CBC News. “I had a three-year plan and now it’s gone.”

Throughout the campaign, Ford repeatedly promised not to cancel the program, and now he’s gone back on his word, depriving 4,000 Ontarians of the income they desperately need just to stay above the poverty line.

Tell the Ford government to keep their promise and allow the Ontario basic income pilot to continue. The people of Ontario deserve to hear the results of a completed, three-year experiment, and the participants deserve what they were promised.

Mining for Canadian imperialism | rabble.ca

onpoli:

News reports published on the heels of Foreign Minister Chrystia
Freeland’s visit to Mexico to meet with Mexican president-elect Andrés
Manuel López Obrador were but the latest example of this laser focus on
trade.

This does a disservice to Canadians, who as a result continue to
operate under the impression that Canada plays a benevolent role in the
region.

Meanwhile in Latin America, Canada’s progressive veneer is paper
thin. Communities throughout the region are wary of Canada’s so-called
friendly image, they have seen the true face of Canadian activities in
the region. From support for dangerous and environmentally destructive mining operations, to support for regime change efforts, Canada has not been a good neighbour to the countries of Latin America.

“The truth is that people, especially in countries that have been
directly affected by Canadian business or intervention, those people
don’t have the same naïve perception Canadians often do,” Tyler Shipley,
an instructor at Humber College, told rabble.ca.

“You speak to someone in Guatemala or Honduras about Canada and if
they’ve lived anywhere near a Canadian mining operation they don’t think
of Canada as some well-intentioned, friendly neighbour, they don’t
believe that for a second. They have experienced firsthand what the
Canadian state and Canadian corporations will do to exploit the land,
the resources, the environment and people in other countries.”

Do the federal NDP plan on raising income tax rates should they form government?

allthecanadianpolitics:

theillusioner:

what does rich mean in this context?

From Jagmeet Singh’s platform in the NDP leadership race:

allthecanadianpolitics:

On the rich, yes.

On anyone else, no.

This is standard NDP policy. Only make those who can afford to pay more taxes, pay more taxes.

Canadians know that when we look out for one another, we all do better. A Jagmeet Singh-led government will build an inclusive and more progressive tax system that will ask Canadians to invest in one another.

This will be done by closing loopholes that have allowed corporations to avoid paying their fair share and help alleviate poverty for millions of Canadians.

As Prime Minister, Jagmeet Singh will take bold action and build a tax system that is more fair and just.

It’s time to invest in all Canadians, that is why Jagmeet Singh will introduce a broad collection of tax reforms including:

More progressive income taxation

  • Jagmeet will introduce new tax brackets for high incomes earners. This will include  two new tax brackets for Canadians earning $350,000 and $500,000 respectively that are 2% and 4% higher than the existing marginal rate respectively.

Capital gains inclusion rate

  • Capital gains almost entirely benefit the wealthiest Canadians. Jagmeet will ensure that the wealthiest Canadians pay their fair share by increasing the capital gains inclusion rate from 50% to 75%.

Estate taxation

  • Jagmeet will implement a 40% estate tax on assets in surplus of $4 million dollars to help build a more equal Canada. Primary residences will be exempt.

Corporate taxation

  • Jagmeet will ask corporations to pay more and help build a fairer society. He will reverse the corporate tax cuts of the last 20 years and increase the Corporate Income Tax to 19.5% from 15%.
  • Jagmeet will bring an end to corporate perks. Corporate tax write-offs for box seat tickets and expensive meals will end and corporations will be asked to pay their fair share.

Tackling tax avoidance, evasion, and loopholes

  • Jagmeet will make sure the Canada Revenue Agency has the resources it needs to combat tax evasion by providing additional resources for data collection and auditing teams.

Jagmeet will also establish a Tax Fairness Commission. It has been 50 years since the Carter Royal Commission on Taxation and a lot has changed in that time. As Prime Minister, Jagmeet will create an expert commission tasked with recommending a path forward to making the Canadian tax system more progressive and balanced, so the wealthiest in our country are paying their fair share. This will include a review of all existing tax credits, deductions, and the TFSA.
