I’m happy that Blue got the House back, too, but am I the only one who thinks the “Oh, we have our first female/Muslim/gay officeholder in X district!” thing is a bit overblown? Who today remembers the first female senator, or the first congresswoman?

brainstatic:

I mean I personally do remember Congresswoman Jeannette Rankin, architect of the 19th amendment and the only legislator to vote against entering both world wars. I’m also very aware of Barney Frank, who was openly gay when he had to share the House chamber with people who said AIDS was God’s justice, and who created Dodd-Frank. And while this isn’t an elected official, the first woman cabinet member, Labor Secretary Frances Perkins, is the reason we have a minimum wage, child labor laws, social security, overtime pay and unemployment benefits. Some people do actually keep track of these things.

Anon, i dont know about you, but representation matters. It empowers people. It makes them feel alive. That yes, we can do this. To know we arent living in a tragic cycle constantly with no way out kinda makes people feel good. It gives them hope.
